HD Radio Gear: The Good and the Better HD Radio Gear: The Good and the Better

There's AM, FM, shortwave, satellite, Wi-Fi -- and now HD.

HD Radio is the broadcasters' answer to XM(XMSR - Cramer's Take - Stockpickr) and Sirius( SIRI - Cramer's Take - Stockpikr) -- digital streams of music and talk that are broadcast on the FM dial -- along with the stereo analog signals we've listened to for years.

(There's HD AM broadcasting too, but since the AM band is mostly for speech, and not music, HD AM doesn't really matter at the moment.)

Day Sequerra has updated its M2.0 HD modulation monitor, adding some nice and very useful features. I first reviewed the original M2.0 in Radio magazine in May 2006, and the new M2.2R model is an attractive piece of test equipment that will likely go in your facility where it can be seen by you and others.

San Diego
KPBS(FM) was an early adopter of HD Radio, serving both San Diego and the Imperial Valley with two full-power transmitters. We ordered two DaySequerra M2 modulation monitors for or first HD Radio install in San Diego, then the M2.2R for our second install in Calexico. I rely on them as our main off-air modulation monitor because of their dependability, performace and features.

Perhaps I'm just an old dog, but while learning the new tricks of HD Radio the one thing that always seems to be missing is a high quality instrument for listening to the demodulated digital signal. We've been forced to make use of the currently available HD Radio receivers, and although they're OK to listen to, I never really expected the greatest sound out of an inexpensive consumer-grade radio. Adding HD2 just made the situation mroe complicated.
